Preventing Targeted Violence through a Public Health Approach
Wednesday, October 7, 2026
2:00 PM ET / 11:00 AM PT
Zoom meeting

Targeted violence — in which an attacker selects a target to inflict mass injury or death — poses a persistent public health threat in the United States, with public health officials playing a growing prevention role since at least 2016. The public health model spans primordial through tertiary interventions, from population-level conditions to individualized engagement with at-risk individuals. Drawing on decades of research, this presentation examines how officials can strengthen protective factors among individuals who believe violence is justified, with panelists discussing interventions to build social cohesion, resilience, and community trust. Mindful of resource constraints, the panel highlights opportunities to upskill practitioners and integrate targeted violence prevention into existing multidisciplinary initiatives, adapting programs to each community's unique needs. The presentation also underscores the importance of program evaluation — including pre–post studies and focus groups — as a critical component of scaling evidence-informed initiatives and advancing the field.

8:00 AM ET / 5:00 AM PT
Zoom meeting

Offered in partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital, this in-person training provides clinicians with the first risk assessment and management tool for targeted violence that can be used by mental health professionals working in generalist settings. Harm toward others is a known risk, yet mental health professionals working outside of forensic settings have few if any tools they can use to assess and manage violence risk to inform risk assessment and treatment planning. The Targeted Violence and Terrorism Strengths, needs, and risks: Assessment & Management tool (T-SAM) offers mental health professionals a collaborative, client-centered approach to assessment and management of risk for both adults and children. The development of the T-SAM was informed by an evidence-based, suicide-focused therapeutic framework known as the Collaborative Assessment & Management of Suicidality (CAMS).
